Finally, the last day of January is here with us! Is it just
me or did this month seem to have had like 9 weeks?? Boy oh boy, it feels as if
we are already in March or something. Anyway, that aside…this month saw our
first event of the year which was dubbed Google Developer Group Kenyatta
University Revamp. It was organized by the GDG KU team which is currently being
led by +margaret adhiambo and +Mercy Orangi who is an alumnus of our
university and also the former lead of this chapter. She is also the current co
lead of GDG Nairobi. +njihia jeremy and I played our part in helping the event run
smoothly GSAs.
Ok, I know some of you are probably wondering what this GDG
I speak of is. I had mentioned something small about them in this post here.
Google Developer Groups are for developers who are
interested in Google’s developer’s technology; everything from Android, the App
Engine and Google Chrome platforms, to product APIs likr the Maps API, YouTube API and Google Calender API. Their aim is to build capacity and
traction for developers. A GDG can take many forms, from having a few people getting together to watch the latest video, to large gatherings and tech talks to events like code sprints and hackathons. Read here for more details on GDGs. Therefore, GDG KU is just a part of hundreds of other
GDGs in the world.
So why did we need to revamp it?? When a GDG chapter goes
for a long period of time without holding a meet up or an event, they are
usually termed as inactive. We therefore needed to hold a meeting to remind
people of the benefits accrued by being part of the GDG KU team.
Through the sessions delivered by Mercy, Margaret and the
special guest speaker of the day +Erick Wasambo, I think
that goal was achieved. The talks were more than innovative and inspiring.
Erick’s talk was motivating and it left the attendants fire to code and be
active members of the group reignited! Mine was as well, I have been slacking
in the coding department of late but I am coming back now! Hehe.
The event would not be complete without some swagged up tees
and other freebies like bands and tags. There were also some refreshments that
the attendees enjoyed after the meet up was over and this was followed up by a
very exciting photo session.
All in all, the day was a success and we hope to have more
of such events during this year! The efforts of Margaret and Mercy cannot go
unnoticed as they were the ‘pillars’ that held this event together. Also a big
thanks to our speaker Erick, loved the talk.
But a bigger shout out to the attendees
because the event wouldn’t have taken place if ya’ll weren’t there. I cannot
name all of you guys, we were so many…but thank you +Maria Mumoki, +Hilary Soita, +BOB RAPHTONE AFWATA, +Lester Obbayi, +Mercy Mukuria, +benjamin mwalimu, +MoSSEY NANDWA and everyone who came and supported the event. But the
biggest shout out of all goes to God. His blessings saw this whole event come
to fruition.
