The Event {Part Two}

Howdy my good people. How’s the going? As promised in this post, I told you that there would be a follow up event. Well, it came to pass this previous Friday! I am sorry it did not go down on the day I has said it would this is due to some challenges we got while trying to secure a venue. However, thanks to my hardworking colleague +njihia jeremy we managed to secure the Computer Lab in the Communication and Information Technology Department in the school.

I wasn't as nervous going into this second event as I was in the first. So I suppose what they usually say about experience and practice is really true hehe. This second event started at about 9:00am. It was mainly for class representatives and club leaders although anyone who was interested in attending was gladly welcomed. The agenda was taking the attendees through the usage of Google apps that would make their roles in leadership positions a bit easier.

Some of those included a deeper understanding of how Gmail works. This was done by Jeremy. It is so amazing how people use it to just send emails without realizing how many other things it can do. So they were taken through adding labels, adding tabs to categorize their emails, sending SMSes and personalizing their account. They were also shown some of the basics of Google Plus which comes with having a Gmail account.

+Kennedy Murimi made the next presentation and showed the attendees how to use Google Groups. He took them through all the steps starting from how to create one, invite members and how to use one. I personally think this app should be highly embraced by the reps as it makes communication so much simpler. Just imagine sending one email and it reaches a multitude of people. We have personally been saved by Google groups as there is much information that one can receive from many different people.

I don't know what +njihia jeremy was trying!

+margaret adhiambo then showed the attendees how to use Google drive. Here they can save their folders and files preventing them from being tragically lost. If you have ever fallen victim to having your storage device malfunction, lost or corrupted then you definitely know the pain of starting over! You should therefore consider saving some of your work in the drive. Apart from that, she showed them how Google docs have made things very interesting as it enables easy sharing of files between people.

Showing off the bands. Recognize your hand??

The attendees were also taken through other apps like Google sites because some of them had a few inquiries about it. The whole time people were demonstrating something, we had instructors {me, +Maria Mumoki+DANIEL KIHIA and +benjamin mwalimu} who went round the Lab helping out those who were stuck or lost at some point.

That's yours truly. Oh so serious :)

Then came the part where all the attendees seemed more interested in than the whole event itself, competition and swag. LOL, one would think we had ‘Google swag’ tattooed on our foreheads! They all got badges, bands and tags. But because the shirts, bags and mugs were not enough for everyone we asked random Google questions. Those who were witty and fast enough to give the right answers were lucky to walk away with the cherished goodies.

The event came to an end at about 1:00pm. It was concluded by serving some refreshments to all those who were in attendance.

We then parted ways after the hilarious photo session where people displayed those weird poses that had never seen the light of day before!

You gotta love this lady! LOL

No event is complete without its fair share of challenges which was the fact that some of the computers in the lab were a bit slow and some did not work at altogether! All in all, the event was a huge success and it got some airtime in Google plus as the hash tags of the day trended!! None of it would have been possible without the amazing help of our volunteers { +Kennedy Murimi +DANIEL KIHIA +Maria Mumoki +benjamin mwalimu and +margaret adhiambo}, our wonderful attendees, my colleague +njihia jeremy, our alumni GSA +Chris C'otewa who came to check up on us, encouragement from our fellow +Google Student Ambassadors Sub-Saharan-Africa, help from our organizers +Jeminatu Alabi-Isama  and +Tayib Fall , and of course favor from the good Lord :)

The country hash tag trended

The events hash tag trended too!!

The next event’s preparations are already underway so watch out for part three of this sequel. Until then, stay well.
