Cupcakes Vs. Wedding Cakes

What a catchy title huh? You know I had to reel you in somehow and if you are anything like me, just the thought of sweet, creamy treats tends to do exactly that. I however wish I had come to the title on my own but the Google UX Master Class that I attended a while back kind of contributed. I always wanted to put a post surrounding the title since then so when the time presented itself a little over a year later, I couldn't resist.

Baking tins and flour aside, we can look at cupcakes and wedding cakes as approaches to take when it comes to product launching. When launching a product, you can decide to go big as in the case of a wedding cake, or choose to start small much like a cupcake. The end goal is the same. Some companies tend to release "cupcakes", something small that works while other companies launch products that are like "wedding cakes", something with big, elaborate and complex designs.

Pick the right approach.
There is no magic formula. You need to choose the right model for you based on your product user needs, available resources, the competitor landscape and your strategy for launching your product. Below are some of the factors to consider when choosing an approach to go with.

Start-up cost:
Wedding cake teams tend to spend truck loads of money on the initial product release. This is because of the participation of huge teams that are involved in building the intricate designs, the cost of marketing, and the cost of materials among other factors.
Cupcake teams on the other hand have a very low start-up capital. The product is small, simple but it works. Smaller teams and materials are needed for it.

Releases:
Wedding cake teams tend to have only one product released due to the costs involved in launching. You only get married once, right? However, where this is not , a lot of time may lapse between other wedding cake releases.
Cupcake teams tend to tweak and release new cupcakes in succession. More releases means that the product is adjusted to fit better with the market as it is customized based on their needs. Challenges observed with the previous releases can be overcome in newer versions. Therefore, each new product is better than its predecessor.

Overall cost:
If you have to do something, do it once and do it right. With wedding cakes, it is easier and less costly to design and release one product. Constantly going back to the drawing board to tweak and design a better product is tiring to be honest.
The overall cost involved in releasing new cupcakes in succession is high. More manpower is involved and in the end, more raw materials are used.

Exposure level:
Most businesses, unless stated otherwise, are there to make a profit. When a business is small and only good at cupcake releases, the business lacks prominent exposure and authority.
Many clients and investors would prefer to conduct their business with large companies that use the wedding cake approach in product releases as they have already curved a niche for themselves in the market share.

So, are you team cupcake or wedding cake?
Thank you for reading.
