Most if not all of you have already
reached that point in your lives where you have had the need to apply for a
job, internship or an attachment of some sort. Am I right? That is something we
all looked forward to! It felt ‘grown up’! But the excitement soon fizzles out
into desperation and anguish when you can’t land such a placement after what
seems like years of "tarmacking"!
You become known around the estates for
carrying a large brown envelope filled with copies of you curriculum vitae! And
if it’s not that, you are the person who will constantly live on the internet
sending out emails and hoping to get some feedback. Even a negative response
becomes very much appreciated because you know at least they had a look at your
application.
What mostly disqualifies candidates who
would otherwise be perfect for the position include matters like the ‘working
experience’. Have you ever looked at a job offer that specified that one should
be a PhD holder between the ages of 24 and 26 with like 10 years working experience
in management? Ok, I know I have exaggerated a little bit but you get my drift
hehe! And you are stuck there wondering where that 10 year working experience
was to come from yet you were busy figuring out whether you were a human being
or a duck while pursuing a full time employment in study.
And that is why this news really
excited me; a step in the right direction to solving that issue. Kenyatta University has signed a deal with 50
companies to offer paid internships for its students beginning next month. Some
of the companies that have signed up to the programme include Safaricom, Nation
Media Group, Britam, KCB, Family Bank, PwC, Ecobank, Co-op Bank, ABC Bank,
SevenSeas and the Chandaria Group.
The placement programme is expected to
offer learners opportunities to gain experience and network with employers. It will see learners work for up to five months
per academic year each time they are off-session. Students will apply at
the university before being picked based on academic performance and
discipline, with the one-third gender rule observed. “It will give the
students a total of one and a half to two years of work experience,” said Prof
Mugenda. For more information read this piece here.
And this is what we love to hear! I feel like this opportunity will give Kenyatta University peeps a head start
in the job market. This way, after clearing the final year, they will not have
to invest in some good quality hustling for a job shoes!
So if you are
interested in this opportunity, you should totally inquire more about it.
I
hope this post was useful. Thank you for reading.
Have
a lovely Friday
